Hepatocellular carcinoma is a leading cause of cancer‐related mortality worldwide, with diagnosis often occuring at later stages when curative treatments are not available. Imaging surveillance of high‐risk patients with chronic liver disease and chronic hepatitis B reduces hepatocellular carcinoma‐related mortality, with high quality serum biomarkers lacking. Primary prevention of hepatocellular carcinoma can be achieved through reducing risk factors for underlying liver disesae, including vaccination programs and antiviral therapy. Further primary and secondary preventation strategies are needed to tackle the rising incidence of non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease and its impact on hepatocellular carcinoma.
