This chapter presents the traditional categories of overview, etiology/pathophysiology, signalment/history, clinical features, key differential diagnosis, diagnostics, and therapeutics of pentachlorophenol (PCP) use in equine. PCP is highly lipid‐soluble and volatile with a pungent phenol type odor. Primarily used as a wood preservative, fungicide, and herbicide. PCP is used in industrial settings by certified applicators as a wood preservative/ pesticide for railroad ties, underwater dock/wharf pilings, utility poles and fence posts. PCP causes uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation and direct irritation to the skin and the respiratory tract. The chapter is an indispensable reference for veterinary clinicians and students dealing with equine medicine, as well as for anyone seeking concise and comprehensive information about equine toxicology.
