• This chapter presents the traditional categories of overview, etiology/pathophysiology, signalment/history, clinical features, key differential diagnosis, diagnostics, and therapeutics of pentachlorophenol (PCP) use in equine. PCP is highly lipid‐soluble and volatile with a pungent phenol type odor. Primarily used as a wood preservative, fungicide, and herbicide. PCP is used in industrial settings by certified applicators as a wood preservative/ pesticide for railroad ties, underwater dock/wharf pilings, utility poles and fence posts. PCP causes uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation and direct irritation to the skin and the respiratory tract.
