• This chapter traces a transnational mode in contemporary American poetry, one that eludes the notion of “root” in the world shaped by the imperial formations of nation, race, and gender. The poetic routes constructed by these fugitive transnationals may constitute a happenstance form of community that is irreducible to the bound forms of the nations, continuously enabling an opening of relationality that the Korean American artist, filmmaker, and writer Theresa Hak Kyng Cha has once called “audience distant relative”. Cha's poetic text Dictée (1980) inaugurated an exemplary trajectory of this fugitive transnationality, leaving palpable yet enigmatic traces on the field of American poetry. Cha's sentences in Dictée inherit and modify many features of Beckett's poetic language for her own ends: an excess of monosyllabic words, proliferation of phrases that undermine the certitude of sentences that contain them, and modulation of punctuations that slow or accelerate the speed of her “thought‐breaths.”
