• Coatings and adhesives are regularly associated in polyurethanes technology because of the commonality of how the systems are manufactured and many of the technology trends. Coatings is an important and rapidly growing value‐added application of polyurethane chemistry. All the material aspects that make polyurethanes into successful elastomers, adhesives, and thermoplastics translate to making high‐performance coatings as well. Coatings often have a decorative and a protective function. Since many coatings are exposed to the environment, especially to light, they are often formulated with aliphatic isocyanates to circumvent photolytic degradation mechanisms. Consumption of polyurethane coatings is global and reflective of finished goods manufacturing that use polyurethane coatings. The global consumption reflects the convolution of industrial, architectural, and protective applications that use polyurethane coatings. The ratio of polyurethane sold into the coatings and adhesives markets is roughly 3:1.
