• Understanding how change occurs in systemic family therapies (SFT) has been an important research focus from the professional beginnings of couple and family therapy. As a profession SFT has shown that therapy works, but as a profession more research on how change occurs, and under what conditions and contexts change occurs, is needed. In the hope of facilitating more SFT process research, this chapter will describe key process research designs (event designs, intensive longitudinal designs, grounded theory, experimental designs), common key procedures for conducting a process study that are applicable across designs (participant recruitment and retention, units of analysis, measurement), and key analysis strategies (Bayesian, multilevel models, actor–partner interdependence models, dynamic systems modeling, sequential analysis).
