  • Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), formerly known as the T‐lymphotropic lentivirus (FTLV), is a retrovirus that belongs to the lentivirus genus. It is closely related to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but because these viruses are species specific, transmission between humans and cats does not occur. Transmission from mother to kitten occurs. Infection can be transmitted in utero or later through milk or saliva. Infection is lifelong and is divided in three phases: primary phase, prolonged asymptomatic phase, and terminal phase (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS]). Following the primary phase of infection there is a prolonged period of asymptomatic infection in most infected cats. In the terminal phase clinical signs are the result of immunodeficiency. There are in‐house enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test kits for FIV that are easy to use and give results within 10‐15 minutes.
