This chapter examines qualitatively the mechanical part of laser shock processing (LSP) of silica glass. This qualitative study of the LSP of silica glass is performed, using the discrete element method‐constrained natural element method (DEM‐CNEM) coupling approach. Using pressure profiles inspired by those obtained using specialized software packages, the chapter analyzes qualitatively the important LSP mechanisms caused by pressure propagation within the considered silica glass specimen. A brief description of the LSP test considered is also given in the chapter. In order to better investigate the ability of the DEM‐CNEM approach to reproduce the different silica glass specificities under laser shock, high laser pressure should be used. To model the laser‐induced pressure, the shock surface is subjected to a pressure loading.
