The decades between 1914 and the opening years of the twenty‐first century reveal an explosion of literary creativity by the Jews who arrived in the United States and by their American‐born descendants. Jewish American literature is a diasporic expression of cultural adaptation, collective consciousness, and communal identity, exhibiting a preoccupation with displacement, movement, and self‐reinvention. This rich body of literature reveals the ways in which the culture and the traditions of Jewish experience are grafted upon a shifting American landscape as well as the ways in which a developing American identity shapes Jewish expression. This chapter examines the trajectory of Jewish American literature and points to some of the major figures and movements that mark this variable period, identifying the changes, influences, and character of Jewish American literature as it responds to American and Jewish life and thought throughout the twentieth and into the twenty‐first centuries.
