The proletarian novel is principally identified with the Marxist‐inflected literary radicalism of the Depression‐era United States. While focusing primarily on the class struggle, many of the approximately 100 instances of the genre address issues of race and gender. The proletarian novel can be analyzed in subcategories defined by subject matter – for example, strike novels, novels about individuals and groups coming to class consciousness – and by form – for example, fictional autobiographies, collective novels. In somewhat altered form, the proletarian novel continues as a class‐conscious, anti‐capitalist presence in current literary production.
