Functional identification of target by expression proteomics (FITExP) is largely based on the empirical observation that target proteins are exceptionally strongly regulated in late apoptosis regardless the cell type, provided the cells are sensitive to the drug. FITExP can be designed on purpose and scaled to desired experimental size, depending mostly on the final number of drugs/compounds of interest. FITExP produces usually a multitude of potential drug target candidates, only the top ones of which are primary targets. In FITExP, a larger list of protein candidates, being mapped on protein networks, provides molecular mechanisms of drug action. A larger and expandable FITExP database containing proteome fingerprints of dozens of drugs can be an extremely valuable tool in deciphering the targets and action mechanisms of new molecules. The need of having unbiased target‐related approaches in drug development was addressed by the application of omics‐based methods to drug target identification and characterization.
