The term chronic B‐cell lymphoproliferative disorders refers to several entities arising from mature B lymphocytes and which involve primarily the blood, bone marrow and secondary lymphoid organs. All these disorders are classified in the World Health Organization (WHO) on the basis of their histopathological features along with immunophenotypic and genetic markers. Their clinical course is often chronic and they mainly affect adults. A constant finding in all these entities is the presence in peripheral blood of leukaemic cells in various degrees. Some of these conditions could be considered as primary leukaemias and these are dealt with in this chapter. Others represent the leukaemic phase of indolent non‐Hodgkin's lymphomas and their recognition is important for differential diagnosis and patient management. Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia is the most frequent of these disorders. In the last decade important progress has been made in unfolding the biologic heterogeneity of these disorders, and also in their prognostication and treatment. As a result, the outcome of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and also those with other B‐cell lymphoproliferative disoders has substantially improved. (175 words; maximum 200)
