- Contrary to the dominant modern approach of characterizing early Christianity as a religion that transcended race and ethnicity, many Christian texts of the first three centuries exhibit self‐identifications of Christians as a race or nation and use ethnic conceptions to structure arguments in defense of the faith. Origen's Contra Celsum is one of the most significant examples of this ethnic argumentation.
