  • Urotherapy is a conservative approach to rehabilitation of symptoms of dysfunction in the lower urinary tract that engages the child as a collaborator. It encompasses strategies to facilitate bladder storage and emptying via a relaxed outlet. As children and their families vary in understanding and beliefs, urotherapy incorporates education and health literacy, along with cognitive behavioral strategies. Most techniques used by a urotherapist are first‐line, but according to underlying pathology, children may be offered more complex modalities. Specific targeted interventions include motor retraining of pelvic girdle muscles, clean intermittent catheterization, neuromodulation, and acupuncture. Optimal urotherapy is provided within a multidisciplinary setting where each professional can contribute their specific expertise. Outcomes and efficacy of intervention are derived from bladder diaries and incident documentation.
