The emergence of recent studies on the periods of Neo‐Babylonian and Persian rule occurred in concert with broader interests in text as cultural artifact, application of the social sciences and attendant models, critiques of traditional male‐ and elite‐oriented approaches, and a nuanced set of historical and ideological questions. This chapter addresses significant of these developments and discusses some of the pressing issues and questions in Neo‐Babylonian and Persian period studies. Understanding the sociocultural context(s) for any era is based in part upon the site distribution, settlement density and population of the area in question. This is a relatively easier task for periods that are well attested in both archaeological and textual traditions and that are the subject of sustained scholarly analysis. Under Babylonian control, the geopolitical center within Judah seems to have been Tell en‐Nasbeh (Mizpah), though south of Jerusalem, Ramat Rahel continued to serve as an administrative center.
