• Aside from cryptography itself, there are two things we should know about: standards and patents. The authors offer their perspectives on both. Standards are a double‐edged sword. On one hand, no one will fault us for using a standard. On the other, many security standards do not work. This chapter first describes how many standards are made. It focuses on the engineering aspects of cryptography. SSL is the security protocol used by Web browsers to connect securely to Web servers. To us, AES is the shining example of how to standardize security systems. AES is not a design by committee, but rather a design by competition. Patents play a role in cryptography. They affect which cryptographic protocols we choose to use or not use. The chapter suggests we contact our lawyer for specific advice regarding patents.
