Beschreibungen/Notizen
Eliot's wide‐ranging knowledge of contemporary sciences has prompted exploration of the fiction in relation to a host of scientific fields and topics: Darwinism, positivism, organicism, psychology, neurology, medicine, wave theory, thermodynamics and the “new physics,” mathematics, optics, audiology. In this essay, the author provides a very brief conspectus of some key aspects of this criticism. It focuses on Eliot's engagement with the sciences of mind and consciousness. In “The Lifted Veil” it was the consciousness of others that intruded loudly on Latimer and poisoned his experience of life, in this essay, Eliot considers the silencing of one's own internal voices and the erasure of the distinctively human capacity to make one's thoughts the objects of reflection. This final essay imagines the obliteration of consciousness and the blessed silence that lies on the other side of roar.
