Beschreibungen/Notizen
George Eliot never constructed a financial plot as dramatic, but used financial networks to establish connections among individual characters, communities, and nations. In her work as a whole, Eliot examines the ways in which human relationships might be reduced to the most elemental monetary exchanges, whether in literal slavery or in the marriage market. At the same time, each of her works represents a local economy connected to national, foreign, and colonial markets. Over the course of her career, Eliot's attitudes toward wealth shifted as her knowledge of the developing financial system in Victorian Britain and its empire increased. Eliot also emphasizes that blood and money are the fundamental elements upon which financial systems are built.
