• In this chapter, the author foregrounds the inherent ambivalence of George Eliot's writing. The chapter proceeds more systematically by listing prominent features of Eliot's narratorial discourse, mostly focusing on Adam Bede. It first elaborates on the narrator persona's strategies of communication, analysis, and evaluation with an emphasis on metaphor and simile. It then focuses on perspective and focalization. The final section of the chapter is devoted to Eliot's irony, particularly in conjunction with metaphor and the use of reflectorization.
