• This chapter examines George Eliot's novels and essays from various dimensions. Anyone who cares for the narrative voice at home in Eliot's novels cannot help but feel at least a little betrayed put off by the legalistic sterility that has taken its place, divested of the fictional narrator's grace‐noting signature style, a whole worldview that have been instructed to designate by Eliot herself, primus inter pares, by the single word of “sympathy”. Eliot makes as little room for the possibility of surprise in the essays as she makes much for it in the novels. For once, Eliot the essayist seems as sorry to leave us, as someone who loves us is happy, after a time apart, to see us.
