• This chapter focuses specifically on the issue of group versus individual treatment in sexual offender intervention. The general clinical literature is examined, followed by sexual offender‐specific research. Most importantly, process issues are discussed in relation to individual or group therapy. It pays attention to examining which type of therapy – if any – is most likely to foster the development of fundamental process principles associated with effective treatment. Regardless of whether a therapist is conducting group or individual intervention, the therapist's characteristics and their ability to develop an alliance is paramount as to whether the intervention will be effective or not.
