• One of the factors that cut across different forms of psychotherapy is the therapeutic alliance. Defined as a measure of collaboration and affective bond between the client and therapist, the alliance has been the focus of a substantial amount of research. This chapter briefly surveys the current state of empirical knowledge about its relationship with treatment outcome, its patterns and development during treatment, as well as its predictors. The chapter also suggests future research directions for the alliance in psychotherapy.
