• The suddenness of the Revolution of February 1848 was such a great surprise for the Orleanist leadership, ensconced as it was in the certitude of its security, that there is nothing else to compare it to than the stupor of Charles X’s entourage eighteen years earlier. The Legitimists were scarcely less surprised and hardly less uneasy than their Orleanist adversaires over this unforseen stroke which avenged them on the men in power and on the “faithless tutor.” Was it possible to limit the repercussions of a disturbance whose shock waves threatened to spread beyond governmental circles to the entire society?
