• Although the Revolution of 1830 overthrew the legitimate sovereign and pushed those faithful to him into the opposition, its greatest effect was not on the destiny of Ultra traditionalism. More important was the Rightward gravitation, enacted in a few months, of a political group which since its formation had followed a firm rule and principle to remain halfway between the extremes and had even tried, with more perseverence than success, to reconcile them. This group was to hold power for the next eighteen years and identified itself so closely with the regime that it subsequently bore its name: Orleanism. At
