• It is no easy task to find one’s way among the irreducible dissonances that resonate all along Sade’s narration. The modes of the heterogeneous and of repetition together infiltrate different levels of the text, but enunciation is the most fundamental of these since it is here one recognizes the voices of the speaker or scriptor. Although his characters lack interiority, Sade creates many different voices, many different linguistic registers and forms of discourse and many contradictions of meaning. All of these are intricately intertwined; we need to disentangle them one by one if we are to understand their principal articulations.
