• The working lives of Jewish immigrant daughters profoundly affected their social and cultural understandings. Going to work meant confronting a world of conflicting messages and sensibilities, a world that both assaulted women’s dignity and introduced them to the liberating potential of new ideas and social patterns. In its negative as well as its positive associations, working life served as a powerful incubator for young women’s emerging identities. Even before Jewish daughters left their homes in eastern Europe, many of them shared an orientation toward social and cultural change. Although they did not necessarily eschew traditional customs and values, growing numbers
