• In the autobiographical writings he composed at the end of his life, Henry James describes the last of his ill-fated encounters with George Eliot. In the fall of 1878, he had gone to the country to visit a friend and learned that Eliot was renting a nearby cottage with her companion, George Henry Lewes. When James called on Eliot and Lewes, he found them both in low spirits, and it quickly became clear that nothing would please them so much as his departure.
