• On august 1, 1984, Ronald Cotton’s life changed forever. This was the day he was arrested and charged with burglary and rape. The primary evidence against him was an eyewitness identification made by Jennifer Thompson, a twenty-two-year-old college student who was the victim of these offences. Thompson claimed that she had studied her assailant’s face, trying to remember every physical feature so she could later identify him. She subsequently selected Cotton from a series of photographs and, later, from a live lineup. In January 1985, Thompson confidently testified against Cotton at trial. Cotton was convicted on both counts and sentenced
