• Playwrights and performers make use of memory both to blur and to enlighten past and present events. Characters can play out moments from the past to re-examine their history and gain a deeper understanding of the present. As seen and performed through a theatrical lens, memory is literally embodied in the characters onstage, providing a unique vehicle for expression and understanding. In the face of crisis, playwrights, and sometimes actors, can use memory plays as a form of psychological recovery from trauma. In a theatric retelling, artists can look back at what happened, contextualizing the traumatic events within their life
