- In the year of Canada’s centenary, and in the middle of the Cold War, Montreal, Quebec, hosted a World’s Fair, the 1967 International and Universal Exposition, known colloquially as Expo 67. Approached by critics as both a “total environment” (Theall 1976, cited in Kin Gagnon and Marchessault 2014, 17) and a series of specially constructed pavilions that were curated monuments to cultural nationalism, industrial production, and global human endeavor, Expo 67’s built landscapes and architectures have been interpreted as symbolic gestures with lasting discursive consequences (Richman Kenneally and Sloan 2010; Kin Gagnon and Marchessault 2014).
