  • In addition to asking them why they and others return to prison, I asked lifers how they thought about their ability to stay out. In their answers three themes emerged. A small group of individuals pointed to their old age and the lifestyle associated with their age. A second theme that was particularly pronounced by non-incarcerated interviewees was the role of self-efficacy. Non-incarcerated interviewees saw themselves as successful not only because they were changed individuals, but also because they felt in control over their lives.
