- In addition to asking them why they and others return to prison, I asked lifers how they thought about their ability to stay out. In their answers three themes emerged. A small group of individuals pointed to their old age and the lifestyle associated with their age. A second theme that was particularly pronounced by non-incarcerated interviewees was the role of self-efficacy. Non-incarcerated interviewees saw themselves as successful not only because they were changed individuals, but also because they felt in control over their lives. Finally, interviewees attributed their ability to stay out to having “a healthy fear” of violating
