  • Economic difficulties and social stress were often experienced by small master artisans in Germany prior to, and during, the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, it was only as a result of the combined force of economic pressures, increased political friction, and an acute sense of insecurity, characteristic of the first phase of the Great Depression between 1873 and 1879, that a considerable portion of the small masters was effectively politicized.
