- Is there a good liberal case to be made for the establishment of marriage? In chapter 1, I argued that to answer this question we first needed to clear up the tensions and confusions that riddle the theory and practice of the state-marriage relationship in liberal traditions. This we did in the preceding four chapters. With the description of the logic of marriage as a formal, comprehensive social institution elaborated in chapter 4, we are now ready shift from a critical investigation of liberal discourse and practice, to normative argument.
