Summary
The view that the ultimate goal of the ecumenical movement should be a “unity in reconciled diversity” has been maintained for almost four decades. It takes up the old and important ecumenical maxim of “unity, not uniformity” giving to it, at the same time, a specific direction in the sense that the sought for unity of the church may embrace also confessional or denominational differences. The article describes how this concept of “unity in reconciled diversity” has developed and also takes up the critical questions it has raised.
