Abstract
It's informative to compare Melanchthon and Luther: Melanchthon was a highly gifted boy; he was 17 years old, when he finished his studies in the university. Luther began his academic studies with 18 years. It's revealing to analyse their different talents. They worked together in the university of Wittenberg from 1518 to 1546. Luther was 14 years older than the humanist. Melanchthon was an esteemed scholar. Luther was excommunicated by the pope and outlawed by the emperor. He gave many impulses, but Melanchthon wrote the first summary of the lutheran doctrine. He was a peaceful man, but Luther was full of emotions. Although they sometimes disagreed they knew they needed another.
