  • Smith shares his experience attending the "Art, Reformation, and the Cult of Martin Luther" seminar at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. They took full advantage of the rich collections of the Herzog August Bibliothek. Together, they examined original late-fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Bibles, including Luther's September Bible of 1522 and the complete German translation of 1534, among other editions. They studied polemical anti-Catholic or anti-Protestant broadsheets, early Lutheran prints, Cranach portraits of Luther, Katherina von Bora (his wife), and Philipp Melanchthon, and a host of other things. One day was devoted to exploring the architecture and decoration of Wolfenbüttel's Marienkirche, which when built around 1600 was one of the first new Lutheran churches. Other classes investigated the cult of Luther from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries. One afternoon they watched and critiqued Luther, the 2003 movie starring Joseph Piennes. Aided by Dr. Volker Bauer, many students met with other early modern and especially Reformation scholars then in residence in Wolfenbüttel.
