• This article aims to approach Chinese kinship through an examination of the symbolism embedding birth. It is suggested that, in terms of a discursive ontology, social strategies of ascertaining belonging define a newborn child as belonging to its father and his agnatically construed kinship cluster, while at the same time, in terms of an iconic ontology, symbolic tableaux indicate that the child initially belongs to its mother and her own relatives. The ethnography discussed is primarily from Frances Hsu's study of 'West Town' in Yunnan Province.
