Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • Stockholm has for a long period of time been an important node in the international music industry. Though the analysis of longitudinal, historiographical and archive based material, this chapter emphasises periods and genres that are rarely recognised in the history of the Stockholm music scene—the story of how electronic dance music was introduced in Stockholm. By focusing on three interconnected themes; pioneers, space and resistance, this chapter aims to contribute to the literature on curation by showing how time and space-specific processes in Stockholm are curating our understanding and experience of specific (sub)cultural expressions. This chapter emphasises periods and genres that are rarely recognised in the history of the Stockholm music scene—the story of how electronic dance music was introduced in Stockholm though the analysis of longitudinal, historiographical and archive based material. It contributes to the literature on curation by showing how time and space-specific processes in Stockholm are curating our understanding and experience of specific (sub)cultural expressions by focusing on three interconnected themes; pioneers, space and resistance. From the early 1970s until the mid-1990s, the first waves of disco and house/techno were introduced to Stockholm through translocal flows of traveling pioneers, music (radio, magazines and vinyl records) and styles (dances, aesthetics and fashions). Dancing, dance culture and even more specifically, club culture are territorial phenomena in such a way that they are “persistently associated with specific space which is both continually transforming its sounds and styles and regularly bearing witness to the apogees and excesses of youth culture”.
