Despite attesting to the BBC’s lasting interest in Beckett’s works, including lesser-known or early pieces, the BBC Written Archive Centre holds no records of his “novel” Comment c’est/How It Is (published in French in 1960 and in English in 1964) ever being broadcast on the radio. Starting with a retrospective of all documented readings and recordings of this work, this chapter investigates this curious absence by re-examining Beckett’s last “novel” as the prose counterpart of a wider-ranging enterprise of voice and sound exploration in the 1950s, studying the influence of Beckett’s engagement with the radio medium in How It Is in order to delineate particular issues of performance and broadcasting inherent to what Beckett once called “a microphone text, to be murmured.”
