• This chapter argues that it is conflicting perceptions of the primary source or cause of risk that leads to conflicting views on risk management as differing sources require different material and embodied practices and processes as mitigation. This chapter draws on birth stories and associated discussions to explore the various ways that those giving birth, and the professionals who provide their care, identify, describe, and manage risk during labour and birth. The chapter particularly focuses on the conflicting ways that the space and environment of birth are used by different actors to mitigate risk.
