In crater assisted cooling the holes are implanted within the crater-shaped structure developed on the gas turbine surface that need to be cooled. This study aimed to analyze the performance spherical shaped crater implanted with different film hole configurations (circular, rectangular, square, semicircular 1, and semicircular 2) oriented at 45° and 180°. Numerical investigations were carried out using the finite volume-based Reynolds averaged Navier strokes approach. Experiments were performed on a heated suction-type film cooling facility to validate the numerical data. The study show that the semicircular 2 model film hole configuration at 180° orientation angle has produced higher cooling performance for the cratered cooling surface. It has also delivered an impressive lateral spreading with higher local and spanside averaged cooling effectiveness on the cratered test surface model.
