  • Flexibility in design, mass customization, minimization of waste, tool-less manufacturing without human intervention, self-development of supports as per requirement, layer by layer multiple color printing ability and ability to construct a complex structure in less time and cost is an advantage of additive manufacturing (AM) technology. This paper reviews the research work on making terrain models by additive fabrication using different data formats. The input data can be GIS, CAD, MRI, 3D scan, satellite, etc., and the output file format is stereolithography (STL). The physical terrain model will be helpful for catchment management, town planning, military planning, and landscape architecture, visualization purposes for a physically challenged person and also helpful for the natural conservation management team to save the biodiversity of Natural World Heritage Sites. The material used for modeling is poly lactic acid (PLA), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC). Some researchers have developed their own software to convert GIS data into the STL file format for the AM process.
