Glauconite facies generally represent a condensed stratigraphic section formed in continental shelf to deep marine condition, which provides vital information on paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental condition. In this paper, geochemical and petrological studies have been conducted on the Mesoproterozoic glauconitic sandstone from Semri Group, Vindhyan Supergroup, central India to understand their paleoweathering conditions, provenance characteristics and tectonic setting. The glauconites occur as discrete grains, rim along with quartz and pellets of various shapes. These glauconite rich rocks are classified as arkose/sub-arkose followed by litharenite and quartz arenite. The chemical index of alteration values ranges from 30.90 to 71.70 (Av. 61.31) and the A-CN-K diagram suggests that these rocks underwent moderate weathering. It also denotes the alteration of K-feldspar leads to the liberation of K for the formation of glauconite. Al2O3/TiO2 ratio of glauconite rocks suggests its derivation from felsic source rocks. The ratio Al2O3/SiO2 > 5 of glauconitic sandstone shows low to moderate maturity revealing the tectonic process during sedimentation. The tectonic discrimination diagram suggests that these glauconitic sandstones were deposited in the passive continental margin.
