  • Asbestos friction materials are found to be harmful to human health and are being replaced. A research is being carried out in developing non-asbestos-based brake pad materials. Considerable efforts are being made in testing and evaluation of various tribological, metallurgical, mechanical and thermal properties of such materials. However, selection of novel brake pad material that meets all requirements becomes a complex task. In this paper, six novel brake pad materials are compared with asbestos friction material and ranked based on nine different attributes using multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) method. The subjective as well as the objective weights are considered. Subjective weights are calculated using analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The databases were collected through standard published research work. As per the order of ranking based on objective, subjective and integrated weights, Periwinkle shell-based brake pad material is found to be the best suitable choice among seven possible alternatives. This work will further lead to the development of asbestos-free eco-friendly friction materials for the manufacturing of automotive brake pads with an objective of enhanced longevity. However, in order to have a commercially viable product, tribo-mechanical behavior of a newly developed materials are to be assessed for a suitable application.
