  • This chapter deals with the reforms of the Austrian universities in the years after the revolution of 1848 and their influence on the process of discipline formation. In sociology of science there are different approaches to explain this process. A prominent example is Rudolf Stichweh’s theory, which describes discipline formation on the basis of systems theory as an internal process. In contrast, this chapter argues that political reasons may also influence discipline formation. This case study shows that the implementation of various disciplines during the reforms of the Austrian universities was aimed at the re-education of the Austrian youth after the revolution of 1848 and/or at stabilizing the Habsburg multinational empire. On the other hand, technological sciences were to contribute to the modernization of the country. Furthermore, this chapter unveils the limits of political influence and points out that emerging disciplines were not able to capitalize at once on political and social benefits.
