Beschreibungen/Notizen
The limitations of conventional mass spectrometers, their sample introduction methods and ionisation sources are assessed in relation to their applications in polymer chemistry. The developments in electron impact methods of studying polymer degradation, using both external pyrolysis and direct introduction are reviewed. Electron impact ionisation of thermally stable volatile oligomers is shown to be of value in conformation studies and end-group analysis, in both homo and copolymers.
Techniques in which the mass spectrometer is linked with other instruments such as gas chromatographs, thermo gravimetric or differential thermal analysers are reported selectively.
Advances in the application of alternative methods of ionisation, such as field ionisation and field desorption, are reviewed. Additionally, the promising but as yet not fully realised potential of secondary ion mass spectrometry, laser pyroly sis mass spectrometry and macromass spectrometry are described.
