Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • This article traces the history of Edgar Allan Poe’s reception across transatlantic literary space. It shows that Poe’s different appropriations—from his ambivalent reputation in antebellum America to his eventual rise to academic literary esteem in the later 20th century—were the consequence of the competition between communities of readers as they defined distinct segments of the modern literary field. Poe’s apparent proximity and respective distance from relevant centers of literary consecration had little to do with the formal properties of his texts. Rather, his shifting position was the result of multiple moments of literary value conversion (commercial, socio-national, aesthetic) and the reading practices that enabled and institutionalized them. The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket serves to illustrate the divergent routes of Poe’s reception and their underlying regimes of value circulation.
