• Mom was always a renaissance woman. Her singing voice was pitch-perfect, and she could play the piano. She could paint and draw, and her artwork was framed throughout the house and featured on t-shirts. She would drag my sister and me into the kitchen to teach us her cooking skills. Her closet was full of the most fashionable shoes, clothing, colorful scarfs, and jewelry. We had a costume drawer filled with costumes she had hand-sewn herself. Despite much resistance from us, she was everyone in the house’s barber. She fixed leaky sinks and changed tires. There was nothing my mom couldn’t do, and if she didn’t know how, she would teach herself, try it out on us, then make us learn how to do it, too.—Mariam El-Ashmawy
