Robson focuses on the French invasions of Italy and Egypt in the 1790s to examine the Revolutionary origins of modern French colonialism. He examines three connected themes: the idea of civilization; attitudes towards religion, science and superstition; and the appropriation of cultural patrimony and its meaning, to analyse the origins and evolution of the French ‘civilizing mission’. By drawing on the experiences and perspectives of ordinary French soldiers, this chapter explores the discourse and practice of Revolutionary imperialism among the men engaged in it and traces the cultural connections between these early experiments in empire-building and the attitudes and assumptions that informed the French colonialization of North Africa in the nineteenth century.
