• Epilepsy, defined as recurrent, spontaneous, unprovoked seizures, affects up to 5% of the population worldwide, which is about 65 million people throughout the world (Hauser and Hesdorffer 1990; Thurman et al. 2011). The incidence of epilepsy in childhood varies among different age groups, and data from various epidemiologic studies indicated that this occurs in 1–2% of children, with the highest incidence seen during the first year of life, plateaus in early childhood, and decreases after 10 years of age (Hauser and Kurland 1975; Hauser et al. 1993; Camfield et al. 1996).
