This chapter argues that Doctor Who, a television programme seemingly about distant epochs, far-away planets and monsters, is, through allegory and metaphor, often really about contemporary British identity, politics and law. The chapter locates this study within the literature on popular culture, politics and national identity. Doctor Who, it argues, is a particularly rich source of commentary on national identity owning to its template and tropes, making Britishness a central aspect of the show. The chapter also argues against the idea of a single “correct” reading of Doctor Who, arguing for an evidence-based debate between different interpretations drawn from a range of perspectives.
